At the Decatur Invitational Tournament, the boys team was unable to defend last year’s tournament title with a fourth place finish. The girls team placed in the same position as last year with a third place finish. Saturday’s tournament was a very competitive challenge for the Bucs. Five of the nine girls teams finished in the top six of last year’s state tournament in either 6A or 7A. On the boys side, four of the nine teams finished in the top seven of the 6A or 7A state tournament last year.
The boys and girls teams were unable to advance past the semifinals in the early doubles round. On the boys side, defending 6A state champ Walker eliminated the #1 doubles team in the semifinals and #2 doubles team in the first round while defending 6A state runner up Florence eliminated the #3 doubles team in the first round. The girls team did not fare much better in doubles. Florence defeated the #1 Hoover doubles team in the semifinals. Walker then eliminated the #2 doubles team in the semifinals and the #3 doubles team in the first round.
However, the Bucs had much more success in singles. Six players either made it to the finals or won the individual title. For the boys, Jake Berg won the #6 singles title after defeating Austin, Florence, and Walker. Matthew Sherrill advanced to the finals in #2 singles but lost to James Clemons. Zac Tucker also made it to the finals at #3 singles against James Clemons but was unable to secure the victory. On the girls side, Sarah Corinne Holditch won the #3 singles title after defeating Sparkman, Decatur, and Florence. At #2 singles, Kennedy Ward defeated Cullman and Walker but lost to Decatur in the finals. Julia Keffer defeated Sparkman and Florence at #4 singles but ended with a finals loss to Decatur.
The boys and girls teams play next at home against Tuscaloosa County on Monday.
