Meet Recap

Hoover entered the second day of sectionals with all 13 of its wrestlers either qualified or still in contention for a berth in the state tournament. Wrestlers qualify for state by placing in the top 4 of sectionals. Seniors Bret Winters and Jarrett Anthony, Junior Christon Taylor and Sophomore DeAngelo DeWitt qualified for state by earning their place in the sectional finals on day one. Eight other wrestlers fought their way to the blood round, where the winner qualifies, and the other goes home. In the 113 lb weight class, Junior Patterson Huff scored two quick pins to take 3rd place. At 120, freshman Connor Dubble narrowly lost an overtime decision to Smiths Station’s Deon Morgan. Sophomore Larry Wallace exerted his dominance over Smiths Station’s Tyler Wilson to score a major decision int the 3rd place match. Junior Corwin Russell continued on his successful season by winning his blood round match and losing a last second 3-2 match for 3rd place. Junior Connor Metcalf socred a 3rd period pin over Oak Mountain’s Mingu Lee in the 145 lb division. Junior Randy Jenkins defeated Thompson’s Dakota Collins in a 10-2 major decision for 3rd place. Junior KJ Williamson battled through injuries narrowly losing his blood round match at 170. Senior Gavin Jackson unleashed complete domination by pinning both of his final opponents to earn the 3rd place title in the heavyweight division.

In the sectional finals, Senior Jarrett Anthony narrowly lost to Oak Mountain’s Michael John Harris to finish second in the 138 lb division. At 182, DeAngelo DeWitt lost a close decision to Coleman Reeve from Oak Mountain. Bret Winters continued his undefeated season by outlasting Oak Mountain’s Jaried Buxton 4-1 to claim the 195 championship. Christon Taylor made fast work of Thompson’s Jeran McCarthy with a first period pin to win win the championship.

As a team, the Bucs finished a close third, with the Oak Mountain taking the title and Thompson being the runner up.
