Senior Bret Winters finished out his season 48-0 on his way claiming the 195 lb state championship. Oak Mountain’s Jaried Buxton stepped on the mat for the third time in the last 3 weeks. The final attempt resulted in Winters’ most successful outing finishing a tough bracket with a 17-4 major decision. The win cements Winters’ place as one of Hoover’s most dominant wrestlers.
Senior Jarrett Anthony also made the finals in the 138 lb weight class. After two convincing wins, he fought to a close runner-up finish.
The Bucs weren’t done on the podium. Senior Gavin Jackson dug deep to emerge as the third place finisher. In his final match, he pinned Bob Jones’ Ben Rogers in the second period allowing him to go out like all wrestlers want – hand raised in victory.
Junior Patterson Huff fought through a very tough 113 lb division to claim his second straight third place finish. Juniors Christon Taylor and Randy Jenkins finished 4th in the 220 and 160 lb weight classes, respectively. Sophomore DeAngelo DeWitt also finished 4th in the 182 lb weight class.
Juniors Connor Metcalf (145), Corwin Russell (132) and sophomore Larry Wallace (126) all picked up wins in the tournament but lost close matches in the elimination rounds.
As a team, the Bucs finished a very close 4th, trailing Thompson by a mere half point. The season ended as a big step forward to re-establishing Hoover as a wrestling power.
