Hoover High School
After a hard fought battle, the Hoover Lady Bucs managed to sweep away Central Phenix City 59-46 after 32 minutes of regulation play – securing a place in the AHSAA 7A State Championship Game this Saturday at the BJCC against none other than the Spain Park Lady Jags, their cross-town rival.
The Lady Bucs, led by head coach Krystle Johnson, started off strong with three-pointers, jumpers, and layups ending the game with a bunch of layups and free throws. Scoring leaders for the Bucs were; Junior #15 Jennifer Andrew with 14 points, Sophomore #14 Miya Kimber with 11 points, and Junior #3 Eboni Williams and Sophomore #20 Jayla Maddox with 10 points. The girls had a total of 37 rebounds, limiting Central 29, with a 42% shooting average in the field, making almost 70% of their free throws and 31% on three-pointers.
“It is a great feeling to know that the girls have worked hard for this and earned their way into the State Championship game. I think the girls responded well to playing on the big stage, knowing that nothing is different than playing back at home, the basket’s the same size, the floor’s the same size. I expected us to be here, as soon as I got the job I fully expected to be in this position, always thinking State Championship. We have a great team, some teams might have great individuals, but we have a great team as a whole” Coach Johnson said.
The Bucs take on the Jags starting at 4:00 p.m. Saturday at the BJCC.
