Birmingham Magazine features Hoover High School athlete Olivia TofaniBy Loyd McIntosh Photos by Cary Norton Olivia Tofani Hoover High School As the children of two Army parents, Olivia Tofani and her younger brother have lived in more states than some people visit in a lifetime, including Hawaii, Pennsylvania, Kansas and Tennessee. By the time the family settled in Hoover, in time for Olivia to enter the sixth grade, she was adept at making friends, trying new things and making a name for herself. Olivia has a 4.0 GPA and is a member of the crosscountry and track-and-field teams, a Hoover Ambassador, a Hoover Belle, a peer helper and tutor and is working on her Girl Scouts gold award. She earned the prestigious Finley Character Award for her character and high school participation. Academically, Olivia is interested in science and working with children and is considering a double major in biology and secondary education. With so much on her plate, Olivia turns to another passion, the piano, to help add some balance to her busy schedule. “My mom says it was something I always wanted to do. I just fell in love with it,” Olivia says. “Whenever I’m stressed out I can come play the piano, and it calms me down.” “It’s good to look up to [my parents] and see how they’ve dedicated their lives to serving others. Also, my coaches are so ready to help me with anything I need,” Olivia says. “They’ve showed me that anything is possible.” *This excerpt is from an article that is featured in the August 2011 edition of the Birmingham Magazine.
