The Hoover Boys Tennis Team came in an overall 2nd place at the Decatur Tennis Tournament this weekend and won 3 of their brackets outright. The day started bright and early at 8:30 in the morning, but all players were excited and eager to start the day. Doubles matches started the day off. The #1 doubles seed started off with fast and confident wins against Austin and Northridge. The #3 doubles seed began their bracket with an exciting tiebreaker against Northridge.

The tournament moved on to singles matches before the finals could begin for the doubles matches, so the boys switched gear and prepared for their singles matches. #1 Josh Oakman, #2 Zac Tucker, #5 Andrew Pierson, and #6 Spencer Bourn all won their first matches in their bracket, and both Josh Oakman and Zac Tucker won their second matches to make it into the finals.

Finals began with doubles matches. The #1 doubles seed was serve for serve against Jasper, who had performed incredibly well all day. Despite being down a few games, Hoover was able to surpass Jasper and begin a tiebreaker. In an intense back and forth between the two teams, Hoover was able to finally secure a win 9-7 in the tiebreaker, and ended the overall match with a score of 11-10. The #3 doubles seed put up a strong fight against Jasper as well, but lost to a close score of 10-6.

The finals for the single matches then began, and Hoover’s #1 seed Josh Oakman was up against Jasper once again. Oakman, despite going into a tiebreaker in the first set, was able to win the first 2 sets of the match and secure a win. Hoover’s #2 seed Zac Tucker was also up against a Jasper player and won his first two sets as well securing his bracket victory.

Ultimately, the #1 doubles team and the #1 and #2 seeds won their brackets outright, but it was the effort of the entire team that secured the #2 spot in the tournament for Hoover. It was a long day for the team, but it was also an exciting and successful one.

The boys team plays their next match on Tuesday against Northridge High School in an away match starting at 3:30.
