The Girls Varsity was back in action again as they welcomed the Homewood Patriots to Buccaneer Stadium. Although it was a bitterly cold night the Patriots started quickly on offense. They capitalized on a defensive miscue by the Bucs defense for a 1-0 lead with barely two minutes gone in the first half. Homewood continued to press their attack but Hoover eventually began to have some offensive fireworks of their own. The first was courtesy of Mackenzie Smith who blasted a shot that hit the far post hard. The ball bounced back to wide open Kyla Shaw, but she was unable to finish as her shot sailed high over the top of the goal. After a few close scoring chances the Bucs finally were able to tie up the match. Junior Defender Briton Slifka scored her first goal of the season when she hit the deflection in off a Hoover corner. The Bucs entered the halftime all tied up 1-1.
The start of the second half saw Hoover control possession and press the attack on offense. The constant pressure resulted in a scoring opportunity for the Bucs and this time Kyla Shaw did not miss. The Senior Forward hammered the deflection which came off a Patriot defender into the net for a 2-1 Hoover lead just four minutes into the second half.. The next goal for Hoover came as Senior Midfielder Angelina Tomasulo was awarded a Penalty Kick. The foul occurred as she was making a strong run between two defenders and she was fouled in the box. She hit a well placed shot that the goal keeper never had a chance to stop for 3-1 Buc lead. The Patriots came storming back and scored on a similar goal as Hoover had earlier in the match. Homewood had a free kick that rebounded off the goalie and was put back in as they climbed back to a 3-2 score. The Bucs’ defense would rise to the occasion as Lauren Flannelly cleared a would be scoring chance with a few minutes left to play. Goalie Haley Lowell and the rest of the Bucs defense were able to keep the visitors from tying the game for 3-2 Hoover victory. The Varsity will be on the road next week as we travel to Mountain Brook on 2/26. Go Bucs!
