Hoover’s Lady Bucs Varsity soccer traveled to area rival Thompson High School for and overtime plus penalty kick shootout win tonight, Friday, 4/13. Level play lead to a 0-0 score at halftime. Thompson was the first to break the drought in the second half with a goal by Senior Melanie Brannon. Hoover’s junior Amanda Gawlowicz was able to tie the game at 1-1 later in the second half when she was able to draw a foul 2 yards outside of the penalty box. Amanda then proceeded to step up to play the ball and stopped, retreated 2 steps, then quickly proceeded to make a well placed 20 yard shot to the far upper right corner The regular time scored remained 1-1, and continued tied through both 5 minute overtime periods, leading to a required penalty kick shootout. Hoover’s lineup put in their first four penalty kicks by freshman Sarah Harrell, junior Sophia Hontzas, sophomore Haley Lowell, and junior Amanda Gawlowicz. Senior Elena Register recorded 1 save in the shootout and pressured the final Thompson player to shoot over the cross bar. Final score posted. Hoover 2, Thompson 1.
