The Girls Varsity Soccer team traveled to Vestavia to face the top ranked and arguably, best team in the state last night. The game began with a quick pace by both teams in the first half. Vestavia had a few opportunities to score first, but were denied time after time by GK Haley Lowell. The Bucs countered attacked and had a few good chances as well. The scoreless game was finally broken open on a controversial free kick. The goal in question was initially ruled an offside penalty by the Assistant Referee on the Vestavia player that scored. However, he was overruled by the Center Referee that determined the ball was headed backwards towards the Hoover goal by a Bucs defender. Despite protest by Hoover players and coaches the Rebels took a 1-0 lead into the half.
Vestavia was able to break the game open by scoring four goals in the second half. The first goal came off a corner that the Assistant Referee ruled crossed the goal line on a deflection off the top post. The next goals were off fast break runs by the Rebels. Although the scoreboard showed a 5-0 final, the game was much closer than the score indicated.
The Varsity Girls will be back in action on 4/11 at Hoover vs Thompson. The area championship is still very much in play. The Girls JV will be playing in the Metro Area tournament which will be played at Thompson High School this weekend. Good luck ladies.
Go Bucs!
